We’ve come a long way from that original breakout animated survival comedy film that premiered in May 2005 and first introduced us to a wonderful world of precocious talking animals from the Central Park Zoo. Now, there is a Madagascar empire that even King Julien would be proud of, with four films and three television series making up the magnificent Madagascar cinematic universe (the REAL MCU).

Whether you’re a kid or just young at heart, there’s something for everyone in the Madagascar titles, and any one of them is sure to be a fun time for viewers of all ages.   1. Madagascar (2005)

    Ah yes, the film that started it all. Madagascar premiered in 2005 and immediately became a box office hit. The film revolves around a group of animal pals living in New York City’s Central Park Zoo. Though lion Alex (Ben Stiller), giraffe Melman (David Schwimmer), hippopotamus Gloria (Jada Pinkett Smith), and zebra Marty (Chris Rock) seem to live the perfect lives, Marty wonders what else is out there and decides to follow the zoo’s crafty penguins after hearing of their plan to escape to Antartica. What ensues is a wild adventure that leads all four animals and the precocious penguins to wash up on Madagascar for the adventure of a lifetime.

  2. Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa (2008)

    The animals of Madagascar embark on a brand new journey in this 2008 adventure comedy sequel when the friends crash-land in Kenya while en route back to the Central Park Zoo. Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa sees Alex, Melman, Gloria, and Marty in an African nature reserve where, for the first time, they get to meet others of their same species. While at first this seems to be a dream come true, the four friends come to find that perhaps life in their natural habitat isn’t everything they had imagined it to be.

  3. The Penguins of Madagascar (2008)

    In addition to the released of Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, 2008 also marked the beginning for another fresh Madagascar title in the form of The Penguins of Madagascar. This spin-off comedy action-adventure TV series aired from 2008 to 2012 on Nickelodeon and from 2013 to 2015 on Nicktoons. It centers on the four Central Park Zoo penguins, Skipper (Tom McGrath), Rico (John DiMaggio), Kowalski (Jeff Bennett), and Private (James Patrick Stuart), transforming them from scene-stealing side characters into our leading little guys as they embark on various missions of their own design to protect their home at the zoo.

  4. Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted (2012)

    In 2012, Alex, Melman, Gloria, and Marty returned to the big screen in Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, an adventure comedy that takes our four furry friends to the circus. After the penguins and chimpanzees fly off on their own in an attempt to leave Africa for Monte Carlo, animals Alex, Melman, Gloria, Marty, King Julien (Sacha Baron Cohen), Maurice (Cedric the Entertainer), and Mort (Andy Richter) track them down at the Monte Carlo Casino so they can all return home to New York City once and for all. But when a chaotic chain of events leads the crew to board a circus train in France, they end up having to perform across Europe in hopes of finding a way back home, and all while being pursued by a psychotic animal-control officer (Frances McDormand).

  5. Penguins of Madagascar: The Movie (2014)

    Skipper (Tom McGrath), Rico (Conrad Vernon), Kowalski (Chris Miller), and Private (Christopher Knights) are back with their very own movie this time. Penguins of Madagascar: The Movie is a 2014 spy action-comedy takes place directly after the events of Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted and follows the penguins as they team up with undercover intelligence agency The North Wind to stop Giant Pacific octopus Dave (John Malkovich) from destroying the world.

  6. All Hail King Julien (2014)

    See beloved Madagascar side-character King Julien (Danny Jacobs) as the focal point in Netflix Original adventure comedy series All Hail King Julien, which ran on the platform from 2014 to 2017. The show is a prequel to the events of the first Madagascar film that revolves around the misadventures of ring-tailed lemur King Julien XIII as he takes over the title of king from his devious uncle, King Julien XII (Henry Winkler), and learns that being a leader is more difficult (and involves a lot less partying) than he would like.

  7. Madagascar: A Little Wild (2020)

    Lastly, you can follow along in the Madagascar universe with this show that, ironically, takes you back in time to the very beginning, featuring Alex (Tucker Chandler), Marty (Amir O’Neil), Melman (Luke Lowe), and Gloria (Shaylin Becton) as children at a rescue habitat in the Central Park Zoo. Originally running on Hulu and Peacock from 2020 to 2022, Madagascar: A Little Wild follows the adorable four pals in their early years growing up together, being themselves, and dreaming big alongside one another.
