Summary[edit]

Description

The placard at the Victoria and Albert Museum reads:

Italy, Milan About 980 Ivory

This holy water bucket, or situla, was probably made at the time of Emperor Otto II's visit to Italy and may have been used during his entry into a city. It would have held consecrated water, to be sprinkled over the assembled company. This images represent Christ's Passion - the events associated with his death and resurrection.
