'EXCEPTIONAL EBONY' Tree Peony (Paeonia x suffruticosa '墨润绝伦-mo run jue lun')

With silky, multi-petalled blooms, densely packed into a rounded flower head, Tree peony ‘Mo Run Jue Lun’ is truly sumptuous, bringing an air of romance into spring and early summer borders. The large and showy flowers of this gorgeous tree peony will add a sumptuous splash of color to the garden in late-spring and early-summer. Packed with gently ruffled petals, the deep-red flowers have a light perfume, and when fully open, they reveal a contrasting ring of plush, golden stamens. Bury your nose into the soft and silky flowers to enjoy their fragrance. Height and spread to 5 feet.

The Shandong region of China has been cultivating 'Mudan' (peonies) for over three thousand years! Champlain Peony Company is pleased to present this lovely 'King of Flowers' from China's ancient peony capital in very limited edition.

USDA Zones 4-8 would be very successful zones for this peony. It can tolerate somewhat warmer areas than most other peonies. Where they are grown in Shandong, China is similar to the American interior mid-Atlantic and mid-western regions with cold, dry winters and hot, humid summers. Typical winter low temps are in the teens Fahrenheit with dips into single digits and with summer temps often exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit. 

Bare roots are available for shipping in late-fall and winter only. 3-4 branches. Tree peonies are sold by the branch number and not by the 'eye' as herbaceous and intersectional peonies. Typically, you will find single-branched tree peonies for sale. Ours are much larger and more mature at 3-4 branches and you can expect them to blossom the first or second year after planting.
