Washout on Icefields Parkway causes lane closure, delays

Article content

Crews are working to fix a section of road damaged from a washout on the Icefields Parkway between Lake Louise and Jasper on Friday.

A social media post from Parks Canada said one lane of Highway 93 is closed about 20 kilometres north of the Saskatchewan River Crossing, with single lane and alternating traffic in effect. Drivers using the road should expect delays.

James Eastham, a communications officer with Parks Canada, said the washout occurred when high water levels on the North Saskatchewan River, which runs alongside the highway, eroded a bank that protects the road from the water.

“I haven’t seen other washouts like this, but on this one, it is having a bit of an impact,” Eastham said.

He said there is currently no estimate on how long it will take to repair the highway.

“Crews are there right now and they are working to stabilize and fix the road,” he said.

Eastham said travellers should plan ahead and expect delays, as the highway could be fully closed with little or no notice, depending on the work that needs to be done.

Drivers can check 511 Alberta to stay up to date with the current conditions.
