A Yellowknife resident hopes to become the national Liberals’ next party secretary later this month.
Christina Monroe has been a part of the NWT Liberals for the past decade, including the party’s successful bid to elect Michael McLeod as an MP three years ago.
Monroe is now in a head-to-head battle with Ontario’s Sam Bhalesar-Saran for the position of national party secretary. A winner will be chosen at the party’s convention in Halifax, which runs from April 19-21.
In her pitch to party members, Monroe says her capabilities with data and online networking can bring the party closer together.

Her entry in the Liberal Party’s list of candidates says she “built up a strong online network connecting all 33 [NWT] communities and as a result was able to share the party message more effectively than had previously been possible.
“Finding creative ways to engage Canadians without the ability to meet with them in person was the key to the most decisive win for any candidate in the Northwest Territories federally.”
Monroe says she wants to “work towards making the party more inclusive and digitally savvy for 2019 and beyond.”
Bhalesar-Saran, born in Oshawa and now living in Ottawa, most recently served as Ontario vice-president and interim president of the National Women’s Liberal Commission.

Writing on a Facebook page created for her campaign, Monroe added: “We have made great strides as a party with allowing our leader to be elected by the people.
“We need to build on that progress and truly become the most inclusive political movement in Canadian history.”
