The “perfect weekend” getaway is going to look different depending on who you ask. Luckily, Montréal is a city that’s got something — and something extraordinary — for everyone. It’s a city that delights the senses, whether you’re touring the local culinary scene, taking in the exquisite winter lights while strolling the cobblestone streets of Old Montréal, or exploring the cutting-edge arts and culture scene.

No matter what sort of weekend you’re after, Montréal delivers, and then some. Follow these recommendations to plan your own uniquely perfect winter getaway.

For the festival lover

Montréal has long been known as a festival destination, and that’s no exception come wintertime. Thanks to the season’s starry nights and sparkling lights, a weekend away can make for some unmatched memories. Case-in-point: This year is the 20th anniversary of Nuit Blanche, an all-night art crawl happening February 25 with experiences set up across the city.

Another winner? Igloofest, where music lovers can dance the night away in the city’s beautiful and historic Old Port from January 19 until February 11. Or sample a little bit of everything at MONTRÉAL EN LUMIÈRE, a nearly three-week-long celebration of the arts, including theatre, music, stunning installations, and culinary experiences, running from February 16 through March 5.

For the romantics

It’s no wonder Montréal is a favourite destination for lovers and romantics alike. The streets are brimming with rich history, culture and winter whimsy that will bring the perfect je ne sais quoi to a weekend getaway.

Want to plan the perfect day? Surprise your special someone with a trip to the Botanical Garden, or get lost in the dreamy avant-garde artscapes at the PHI Centre. Then treat yourself to next-level rest and relaxation at the famous Bota Bota spa-sur-l’eau. The dry sauna and outdoor heated pools —not to mention, the gorgeous views—won’t disappoint.

Finally, do dinner right— French-style— with a steamy cheese fondue at Restaurant La Raclette. For late night cocktail stops that score top points on ambience, check out the cleverly disguised Cloakroom Bar or the sultry and dimly lit Big in Japan.

For foodies

You easily could (and definitely should) build an entire weekend getaway around the unparalleled gastronomy scene in MTL. In fact, you could do an entire trip around brunch alone — arrive early at hot spots like Arthurs Nosh Bar and Larrys to avoid missing out.

If you’re looking to experience as many tasty bites as possible, consider a day (or night) trip to one of the city’s many incredible food halls. There are three located within walking distance from the downtown core: Le Central - Manger Montréal, Le Cathcart Restaurants et Biergarten, and Time Out Market Montréal.

For family fun

Skate, ski or snowshoe and delight the whole gang with an invigorating day of outdoor activity. Montréal’s extensive collection of parks offer plenty of options for play, from the cross-country trails of Parc Jean-Drapeau and Mount Royal Park, to a skate along the St. Lawrence River in the Old Port, or through downtown’s Esplanade Tranquille, which transforms from public square into a free outdoor skating rink during the winter months.

Be sure to warm up with a classic poutine and hot chocolate once you’re done, then head out for an afternoon of kid-friendly educational fun at the Montréal Science Centre or Pointe-à-Callière, which features interactive archaeological exhibits and workshops that are sure to thrill your little learners.

For the coffee connoisseurs

For some, the best (a.k.a. only) way to explore a city is with java in hand. Hitting up a local cafe can be an easy entry point into any of Montréal’s plethora of vibrant neighbourhoods, and makes for a great pit stop to refuel after a day of sightseeing.

From institutions like Café Olimpico in the Mile End to Cordova on the laid-back streets of Saint-Henri, to Crew Collective & Café out of a converted art deco bank in Old Montréal, there are hundreds of fine brews to be found across the city, making it a coffee lover’s paradise.

Montréal comes alive during winter, offering endless lights and endless moments waiting to be discovered. Visit Tourisme Montréal to plan your trip, and light up your winter this year.
