After months of designing, building and testing weed-whacking robots and crop-analyzing drones, 11 #SFU mechatronic students led by Professor Woo Soo Kim have touched down in Arusha, Tanzania to field-test their innovations and collaborate with local researchers and communities. This two-week field school gives students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in research workshops with Aga Khan University and the Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science and Technology (NM-AIST). “Each individual region has challenges, and perhaps [Tanzania’s] problems can be solved with our solutions. We can help each other and eventually global challenges like climate change or food security issues, and bigger objectives, can be achieved by engaging in these activities.” - Professor Woo Soo Kim
Starting with an immersive field trip in Arusha, Tanzania, We’ve begun to focus on the “regional context”, enriching our research experience at AKU ACER with its ecological richness. Through shared meals and activities, I've learned extensively from fellow students, embracing the African context to enhance our engineering studies eventually for sustainable agritech technologies. Inspired daily by our surroundings, I'm eager to contribute to our learning environment. Also huge thanks to AKU members for their warm hospitality. The show must go on! #Tanzania, #AKU, #SFUresearch, #SFUinternational, #Arusha, #Drone, #WeedRobot, #Collaboration, #BCCAI, #Mechatronics, #FAS Emmanuel Sulle, Murad Jivan, Joseph Gambay, Msuke Mtoka, Azmina Jivan, Hadi Moeinnia, Nik Xia, Dmitry Demin, Jeannifer Labelle, Jaydeep S., Khail Alibhai, Devin Armstrong, Kimia Rezaeian, Jacob Angelozzi, Yonghao Wen, Gavin Theys, BCCAI - BC Centre for Agritech Innovation
