1961 Chevrolet Corvair Rampside

Sold for $19,000 on 4/13/17comments-icon62Comments
1961 Chevrolet Corvair Rampside

This 1961 Chevrolet Corvair Rampside is a cosmetically restored example, and features a replacement flat-six sourced from a Corvair Sport Coupe paired to a 4-speed manual transmission. It was purchased from a Corvair mechanic in Southern California, who acquired it as a prior owner’s stalled restoration. The engine replacement is claimed to be the only deviation from original specifications. All the trim was reportedly either replaced, re-chromed or polished, and the interior has been restored with new under dash wiring, a harness, headliner, carpet, seat cover, and cushions. All glass and panels are believed to be original, and wear a recent two-tone repaint with what are said to be limited imperfections. No service records are available. It is being sold with a clean California title in the seller’s name.

All new weather strips, rubber bumpers and grommets replaced following the fresh repaint and restoration of the chrome trim. The seller has not found any rust, and mentions a run in the paint and a chip in the windshield that are detailed in the gallery. Door exterior emblems have not been installed but are included.

The pickup’s namesake rampside offers dual access to the bed. The bed was painted with color-keyed rhino lining so it can be used for work purposes if desired.

The interior has been reupholstered with a new carpet, headliner, cushions, seat material, and lap belts. All the gauges and original factory radio are said to be in working order. The odometer shows 43,990 miles but is not believed to be accurate, and the seller has added 800 miles over their ownership.

The air cooled flat six is a replacement engine from a Corvair sport coupe, and features dual carburetors with the secondary ports blocked off. It is paired to a four-speed manual transmission and has been converted to a internal regulated alternator for more power and brighter illumination. Modifications include an Offenhauser aluminum deep sump oil pan for improved cooling. The clutch has been replaced and flywheel has been resurfaced.
