How to Make a Rail Fence Quilt
Rail Fence quilts are a classic patchwork design of blocks made from fabric strips arranged in a repeating pattern. Sometimes they form stairsteps, and sometimes they’re set on a diagonal to form W shapes. It’s one of those timeless quilt designs that can look traditional or modern based on your fabric choices, so get creative and have fun with your quilt design!
We created a FREE Rail Fence Quilt Size Guide for Crib, Lap, Large Lap, Twin, Queen, and King-size quilts.
This pattern is quick to make using 2.5″ strips, making it perfect for a baby quilt or for teaching a friend to sew. Stomp Stomp Roar by Stacey Iest Hsu for Moda Fabrics (shown below) looks so cute as a Crib-sized Rail Fence quilt! Including one light fabric piece in each block highlights the stair step design.
Rail Fence blocks are easy to make with fabric from your stash, and you won’t need any technical cutting or piecing skills to make one! Once you have gathered your materials, it’s time to start sewing.

- Quilt Size Guide for 6″ finished Rail Fence Quilt Blocks
- 2.5″ strips or some Jelly Rolls
- Creative Grids 6.5″ x 12″ Quilting Ruler (also available for left-handed quilters!)
That’s all you need to get started on your own Rail Fence quilt! Gather your supplies and get ready to sew.
Our Rail Fence Quilt Size Guide calls for precut 2.5” x 6.5” strips, but if you’re starting with longer strips you can save time by sewing 6.5” wide strip sets. This is a great resource! Even better would be to include the number of 2.5” strips to a make each size.
One strip (Width of Fabric at least 40 inches) will yield 6 rectangles that are 2.5″ by 6.5″. Their chart tells you how many rectangles are needed. For example the lap quilt takes 240 rectangles. 240 divided by 6 equals 40 strips. A Jelly Roll has 40 strips but you might not want to use every one of them.
