His elite clientele once included Judy Garland, Cary Grant, Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks, his work for them considered to be the epitome of Southern California architecture, with motor courts, vaulted hand-carved ceilings, flowing fountains and lush landscaping.
