Living things are connected to each other by food chains.
Each member of the chain feeds on the one next.
A food chain represents who eats whom.

A food chain is a cycle of energy.
It’s the transfer of matter and energy in the form of food.

Food chains start with energy from the sun.
Plants use this energy to make their own food through photosynthesis.

FOOD CHAINS vs FOOD WEBS
A food web is the interconnection of food chains.
Food webs show the many different paths living things are connected.
Food chains only follow just one path.

PRODUCERS, CONSUMERS, AND DECOMPOSERS
There are three types of living things in an ecosystem:
producers, consumers, and decomposers.

PRODUCERS
Producers make their own food through photosynthesis.
Plants are producers.
Without producers, consumers would die.

CONSUMERS
Consumers need to consume or eat their food.
Animals are consumers.

Some animals are herbivores. They eat plants.
Some are carnivores. They eat other animals.
Other animals are omnivores. They eat both plants and animals

DECOMPOSERS
Decomposers consume dead plants and animals.
They break them down into nutrients released into the soil.
These nutrients are used by producers to grow.
And the cycle begins all over again.
Bacteria and fungi are decomposers.
