Arkansas River Valley Geography
In between the Ozarks and the Ouachitas is the Arkansas River Valley. The Arkansas River Valley is a mix of flat-topped mountains like those found in the Ozarks, and ridges like the Ouachitas, with the great Arkansas River flowing through its valley. The tallest mountain in the state, Magazine, can be found in this region (Logan County), as well as Petit Jean and Nebo.
Wide bottom-lands with fertile soil are found along the river and produce many different crops. Pines and hardwoods, prairie grasses, bottom-land forests and swamps mark the landscape. In the 1700s and early 1800s, bison and elk were common sites as the area became a migration corridor for many animals. Today, migrating birds still follow the Arkansas River through the valley.

Large grasslands are another key feature in this region. Fertile soil and the Arkansas river allow many crops to be produced here. http://www.historylines.net/img/Summer_2009/big/Arkansas_Valley.jpg
