Nodder is a character created by Orla Kelly, Omar Salem and Miriam Schöb, three artists studying Fine Arts BEAR at ArtEZ in Arnhem, the Netherlands. They formed an art collective at the invitation of the Radboud University for the purpose of creating an artwork on the topics of “the other”, internationalisation and the relation between students and the facilities on the Radboud campus. This art project is a collaboration between Nodder and Cultuur op de Campus of the Radboud University, as well as the art programme of the Radboud University and Radboud UMC. The whole project got funded by the art programme of the Radboud University.
The character Nodder is based on the dynamic between the three artists. The character reflects, questions and criticises the academic system of the Radboud university, the social patterns of the students, the rules, the spaces, the artworks in the university, the facilities and the student‘s relation to these facilities. In the working process, Nodder carried out a survey with 50 questions, in order to understand the „Radboud student“ better.
The word Nodder came from the act of nodding, tilting the head up and down as a gesture of agreeing. We have noticed this act happening repeatedly during the meetings with the art committee, the meetings between the artists themselves and random conversations with the staff members and the students. Also, it rhymes with „the other“.
The zine from Nodder is the results of meetings and conversations between the group members that took place at the campus of the Radboud University as well as via Skype. It includes observations, narratives, criticism, irony, along with content collected from the survey that is represented by the writings and images coming from a collective consciousness (which is Nodder).
The artists were chosen to make a work on the topic of internationalisation within the universities atmosphere and to a broader topic of „the other“ because of their nationalities, not only as in having different backgrounds or places of birth but an „other“ that can be „otherised“ within their community.
