I got this because I needed a filter for my 20G wide freshwater tank fast and on a budget. I’ll admit it was a risk, but all for the best. Very easy set up, and cleaned the tank up completely in just a few hours, so very happy fish. The filters are easy to swap out, I’ve found they last about a month. They are also decently affordable so that has been a plus. In terms of noise, I don’t hear the pump motor at all unless my head’s right next to it, or I’ve just switched it back on after turning it off (it makes a whirring and gurgling sound until it gets the water flow going, so if it doesn’t seem to be working right after plugging it in, give it a minute or two). There is some sound from the water flowing back into the tank, but I find that quite pleasant. The current generated will depend on your water level, but I find it’s relatively gentle. The compact design keeps it from being an eyesore. The included intake guard is sufficient however I did decide to use a filter sponge on it just for a little something extra – this is not a necessity, however.Overall an excellent filter for the price, would recommend to anyone with a small to medium tank and a tighter budget.

This filter definitely works to filter the water in my 10-gallon tank. Whenever I replace the filter and some crud gets back into the water from jostling the old filter, a new one filters the water to crystal clear very quickly.I recently had some issues with the filter being quite noisy—making some seriously annoying grinding noises—but I emailed their customer service and they quickly and efficiently helped me diagnose and fix the problem. There were some particular spots I had failed to clean, and these were causing the noisiness. Now, it is practically silent and humming away filtering great.

  3. NotintheMatrix

This power filter with biowheel is perfect for my 10 gallon tank. First, the biowheel introduces nutrients and microbes to make the water safe for fish. Second, the pump keeps the water moving well enough that the tank is sufficiently oxygenated. Initially, I believe I had a 75 gph pump for my 10 gallon tank, but since I upgraded to this pump/filter, I seem to have fewer issues with nitrites and nitrates (which again may be attributed to the biowheel and the fact that it is circulating more water than a pump that functions at 75 gph. In sum, I recommend this pump, biowheel and filter. I’ve been very happy with it, and I believe you will too. OH! I almost forgot! This pump uses Marineland Rite Size A filters, so not only is the cost of this pump is affordable, but you also won’t cringe every time you change the filter because the filters are reasonably priced as well!

This filter is the best I’ve had so far, and I’ve done Aqueon, Tetra, Fluval and whatever came with the combo tank packs I’ve had in the past. I’ve kept fish since my early teen years (I’m now in my 30s) and I tend to dedicate myself to finding a perfect middle ground of care between Average Joe Pet Owner and Avid Enthusiast. I want ALL my pets to have happy, healthy, generous lives but I can’t dedicate my time and money to giving them the absolute best. This filter falls into that comfortable middle space where you want quality but you’re not trying to spend your entire paycheck.• I can’t agree that it’s too loud. Mine is actually incredibly quiet.• The suction isn’t as fantastic as my ideal would be, but it’s on par for the product and it’s in the range it needs to be for my 5.5 gallon tank. If it were more powerful my Betta wouldn’t have a very pleasant time getting close to it. It still cleans up the 5.5 in no time flat, so I’m satisfied.• If you keep your water parameters right and your quality tidy (no overstocking or overfeeding), the filter can last longer than the typical change out time.• If you really want to make it perfect for fish like Betta, add a cut sponge filter to the output. It cuts down on noise, throttles back the water disruption quite a bit, and adds extra filtration. (See photo) Just make sure, once a month or so, that you rinse the sponge in tap water (to kill algae) and let it direct sun dry for at least 12 hours before putting it back (evaporates the chemicals in tap water so you don’t kill your bene-bacteria).I definitely recommend this filter.

I have used many filters and this to me is the best one. I have used mostly Tetras and Aquaeon filters. But the problem with T and A’s are the filter bags get dirty TOO FAST and it’s impossible to rinse them. When the filter gets too dirty, it won’t filter anymore at all, but rather water flows from above the filter. As a result, if you want to keep a clean filter, then you will have to change them every week or so, and they are EXPENSIVE if you do that. However, after even 2 months, this filter holds up really well, and it’s extremely easy to clean. So for people on a budget, you can use the filters for much longer without needing to change it.

Great filter. Marineland makes really.solid and affordable products. This filter fit perfectly into my tank, to replace the crappy original one in my tank. The filters are cheap and effective. The bio-wheel works perfectly and adds bio-logical filtration. Also, it rests outside the tank to give fish more room inside! This will be my go-to filter for any small tanks in the future. Highly recommend this filter!

Seriously one of the coolest filters I’ve seen for small/medium aquariums. The bio-wheel is a smart feature as I’ve seen similar product designs without it and beneficial bacteria levels can swing around during filter cartridge cleaning/replacement.It’s a quiet filter, with only a light amount of trickling water noise (that honestly is soothing to hear) with no humming or annoying vibrations. The filters are a proprietary type but a 3rd party filter from our local Walmart also fits identically, so that is also nice.Very easy to clean. The plastic chassis of the whole thing comes off easily and doesn’t make a huge mess. No tight crevices or spaces makes rinsing the unit very easy.If they made one for very large aquariums, I would purchase one for our backyard system. We love it.
