Today’s tutorial subject is the colorful flower of Gaillardia.

Part of the Asteraceae family, Gaillardia grandiflora has the same floral structure as Bellis perennis that I sketched a few days ago: a capitulum composed of hundreds of disc florets forming a circle in the middle, and ray florets surrounding this middle.

By definition, ray florets are flat, resembling petals, but in this specimen, ray florets have a trumpet shape, spectacularly colored with pinks, reds, yellows and greens.It is not a easy one to draw because the many and small ray florets that look like flowers themselves, have small petals that often intertwine and overlap.
