This painting of Mt. Jo is a tribute to a tragically beautiful love story. It is a story of Henry Van Hoevenberg and his lost love.

In 1877 Henry made his first trip to the Adirondacks, where he met a beautiful Brooklyn girl named Josephine Schofield. The fell quickly and deeply in love with each other as well as with the mountains. When they hiked Mt. Marcy together, they dreamed of buying the land surrounding a heart shaped lake and building a house in the valley below.

Sadly this was never meant to be. Josephine’s father refused to give his blessing as she was arranged to wed one of her father’s well-to-do friends. When she refused, he became irate, forbidding his daughter to marry some man she met in the mountains. Josephine disappeared after a heart-breaking goodbye to Henry.

No one knows exactly what happened, but lore has it she took the train to Niagara Falls. Reports say she was last seen on Goat Island (upriver from the falls) where her hat and book were found. She was never seen again.

A grief-stricken Henry’s world was upended by never seeing the love of his life again. He moved to the High Peaks where he spent the rest of his life. He bought the land they dreamed about and built a lodge. He named the small mountain on the property after his love: Mt. Jo and he never gave his heart to another.

Though the Original Painting has already sold, there are prints available! Poster prints are 24 x 36” (the same size as the original). Canvas prints are 16 x 24”. There is an option to order a large canvas print that is the same size as the original with hand embellishments added to give it an original painting’s touch!

Canvas prints are available upon request! Please allow up to 2 weeks for the print shop to work its magic before shipping! At least another two weeks should be added with hand-embellished prints to ensure that they will be safely varnished and cured before shipping.
