CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WINA) – Matthew Buckland, the Ruckersville man charged with rape, made his first appearance in Charlottesville General District Court Friday, where he told the judge he was there on false accusations.

The 21-year-old was recognized Wednesday in Prince William County, where he faces charges of resisting arrest and receiving or buying stolen goods. He also faces charges in Albemarle County, where he allegedly broke into a church and stole knives and clothing and refused to give a DNA sample earlier this month.

Charlottesville’s rape charge is for an alleged incident in March of last year. Buckland told both the judge and a bailiff that “everything is the result of false accusations.”

Buckland will be appointed a public defender, with his next hearing on July 27th.
