While hardy geraniums might not be the rarest or most sophisticated of plants, they have a special place in my heart, and none more so that the purple cranesbill Geranium x magnificum. Every year as May gets ready to bid us farewell, this bursts into flower and, in partnership with the alliums, shines a violet light into the darker corners of my flowerbeds. I love that depth of colour – eventually the petals drop and, lying on the freshly weeded soil, seem to lose none of their intensity. So much joy from one uncomplicated plant that makes no demands upon the gardener.  Simple things really are the best.
