THE DONG SON BRONZE DRUM

The Dong Son Bronze Drum is a reflection of the special cultural characteristics of the ancient Viet people. The first drum was invented three thousands years ago in northern Viet Nam by the Lac Viet, the remote ancestors of the Vietnamese people.

 

The bronze drum played a vital rote in Dong Son society. It was present in most important activities of Lac Viet civilization. Made for religious ceremonies, rallying men for war, or for other secular roles, the drums were decorated with rich and well composed images of objects, humans and animals. Together these images provided a lively description of the Dong Son society and its people, their daily chores, spiritual life and ceremonial activities.
In the ancient daily life, Dong Son drums had a meaning beyond their use as a musical instrument; also representing wealth and prestige.

The Dong Son drums exhibit the advanced techniques and great skill in the lost-wax casting of large objects, which reached the level of artistic perfection.
In the middle of the drum face is an image of the sun with various geometrical patterns, flocks of deer and aquatic birds, human figures, musical instruments, and activities such as pounding rice, drums beatings.

 
With images of men clad in garments made of feathers of aquatic birds, signify bird-men with totemic significance, dance to the tune of clappers, Small buildings and houses on stilts and, on a circular swelling below the head, boats and warriors carrying axes, javelins and arrows represent a rich culture of the past of Vietnam history.
