Monstrosities of 1818 Cruikshank Grecian-bend
Monstrosities of 1818, by Cruikshank: Grecian-bend
Return

The Grecian bend became a popular way for the fasionable set to make fools of themselves. Extremes in fashion such as men with collars vying with Giraffes (the Giraffes won, of course), extremes in sparrow cut-away tailcoats, feathers that would make Osteriches laugh. Women wore bonnets bigger than an Elephant's ear. In the greatest extreme of all, women walked the "Grecian-bend" looking entirely as if they had lost their minds (but proving they never had a mind). Don't laugh too hard: every generation proves itself to be equally ridiculous! After all, bird mating behaviour can be as extreme as the mating displays of humans. Click for more!.
