TOURISM IN CURITIBA

And Curitiba, how about it?

Six of the 15 main tourist destinations in South Brazil are in the state of Paraná. A ranking of the most popular cities for those who want to visit the region was released in 2018 by the specialized site Traveling with Expedia. Curitiba leads the list, followed by Foz do Iguaçu, land of the Falls, in second place.

The survey highlights the potential of the capital of Paraná with a route that mixes history and gastronomy. Curitiba was also highlighted for its proximity and easy access to other nearby tourist points, which can be accessed in the same day of tour — such as Morretes and Antonina, which are on the coast, by a train that cuts through the Serra do Mar (mountain rage).

Curitiba is also the third most popular business destination in Brazil (behind Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo only), according to the International Tourism Demand, a survey conducted by the Ministry of Tourism and the Foundation Institute of Economic Research (Fipe) and released in 2019. The study also shows that 95.9% of business visitors arrive in Curitiba by air and only 4.1% by land.

For Tatiana Turra, president of the Municipal Tourism Institute, the result is a recognition of the good work done and the quality of the receptive work. “We have several actions to boost business and event tourism and the numbers reveal that we are on the right track,” she said. Curitiba has an excellent infrastructure for events with spaces for up to seven thousand people, quality hotels with 20 thousand beds, in addition to an extensive and varied gastronomic offer, tourist attractions, and also tax incentives to attract new partners.

How about visiting Curitiba on your next vacation? Check below some of the main tourist attractions of the city.

OSCAR NIEMEYER MUSEUM (MON)

In a complex of two buildings, installed in an area of 35 thousand square meters (of which 19 thousand are dedicated to the exhibition area), the museum is a true example of achitecture allied to art.

The first building was designed by Oscar Niemeyer in 1967, faithful to the style of that time, conceived as an Institute of Education. This building has the second largest free span in Brazil, with 65 meters. It was renovated and adapted to the function of a museum, for which Niemeyer designed the annex, resembling an eye (for what it is nicknamed “Museu do Olho” — the “Eye Museum”), printing a new characteristic identity.

It was naugurated on November 22, 2002 under the name of New Museum. After the conclusion of the annex it was reopened on July 8, 2003, receiving its current name.

The institution focuses on visual arts, architecture and design. Due to its greatness, beauty and the importance of the collection, it currently represents a cultural institution with national and international projection.

It’s the city’s landmark. In 1889 it got its current name: Tiradentes Square. Besides a statue of the Hero of Inconfidência, two obelisks call the attention in the place. One marks the distances, the other the presence of the Portuguese. The glass floor allows us to observe the old paving of the square, discovered during the renovation carried out on the site in 2008. The square is also home to the Cathedral of the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of Light, which is over a hundred years old. In neo-Gothic style, it reveres the patron saint of Curitiba.

13 – John Paul II Wood/Polish memorial (Bosque João Paulo II/Memorial Polonês)

It was inaugurated on December 13, 1980, right after Pope John Paul II visited Curitiba in July of the same year. Its area, 46 thousand square meters, was part of the expropriation that involved the old candle factory Estearina. The seven houses made of logs are a living reminder of the faith and struggle of Polish immigrants, containing objects such as the old cart, the sour kite, cabbage and an image of the patron saint, the Black Virgin of Czestochowa. The patron saint’s picture is in the house blessed by the Pope, which served as a chapel on the day of his visit. In Curitiba, Polish immigration began in 1871.
